My niece has b...You have explained a mystery to me. My niece has been posting pictures of her "Elf on a Shelf" every day in December. She's very creative, and the Elf has been doing some amazing things, however given the story behind it, I am now inclined to think, "Ewwwwwww!" What compels parents to lie to their children like this?<br /><br />My own Most Marvelous Father insisted right from the beginning that, "I have worked for the money to be able to buy gifts for you to put under the tree. No fat man in a red suit is going to get credit for anything you might find there." Consequently, "Santa" became synonymous with my father, and we never went through the agonies that some of my peers did upon discovering Santa was a myth. Of course, I inadvertently caused this distress in grade three by firmly informing my seatmate that Santa would not be visiting his house as he didn't exist. The teacher was unhappy with me, however my mother rigorously defended their choice not to lie to their children, and that if I were to be punished for telling the truth, then perhaps the teacher had things slightly mixed up.
